Internet Safety with Primary 4 - 7
Our Primary 4 – 7 pupils took part in an engaging and informative presentation led by Constable Rachel Harkness, PSNI, who guided the children through the ever‑changing world of artificial intelligence (AI) and online behaviour.
The session began with an exciting fact that astonished the pupils – AI was first created in 1950! From there, the children explored the positive and safe uses of AI, including:
- advancements in the medical field
- scientific research
- support for deaf people and those who are visually impaired
They also discussed the misuse of AI, helping pupils understand why AI exists and how important it is to use it responsibly.
Rachel led an interactive activity where she read various statements, and pupils had to decide whether each example was a good use or a misuse of AI. Throughout the workshop, she reminded everyone about the importance of being safe online, being kind, and remembering that we are responsible for everything we do – both online and offline.
The pupils reviewed what to do if something online feels unsafe:
- STOP what you are doing
- CLOSE the game or app
- TELL a trusted adult
They also talked about who a trusted adult might be – someone who will protect you and make sure you are safe.
Keeping Safe on Apps & Social Media
In response to a P6 question, Rachel shared that Snapchat is currently the most common app used for online misuse. She also reminded pupils that the legal age for all social media apps is 13.
The presentation reinforced familiar internet rules and encouraged pupils to think carefully before posting online.
Key Messages for Our Pupils
- Be kind and respectful online.
- Before posting, ask: Is it helpful? Is it kind?
