Make it into bingo game for all the family. Use the 100 square below to locate numbers from 1-100 eg find 36.... count on 1, count back 3 etc. While out and about, count in 2s, 5s and 10s. Start with forward counting and then try counting backwards within 100.

My Tens and Units booklet

The children are beginning a new concept here, so this is only giving experience of the concept as it will be further taught in year 3. Please use some sort of practical materials initially and indeed throughout the activities to show the children that teen numbers are made up of one ten and __ units. That when we have 10 ones (units) it is no longer called units but becomes one Ten. You can see from the pictures on the worksheets that the children need to physically make one ten with, for example,16 objects. then it becomes one Ten and six units (or ones) They should complete the first 7 pages in the booklet this week. We can’t stress enough that the children should use practical materials in these initial stages both in practice with yourselves and when completing the worksheets.

Capacity booklet

Use the Water area challenge cards 8-15 in the Capacity booklet to investigate and also using containers for filling and pouring. Use language such as full, half full, empty and which holds the most to familiarise the children with the language of capacity.

Mathletics:

use the number activities to reinforce your learning on number facts, counting within 50 and 100.

First Mental Arithmetic Book 3 – complete 1 page per day.

Literacy

Reading

Remember to look at the Project section on MyON and read some books on the topic of Summer. Check in the Year 2 Website folder for how to access Projects on MyON.

Writing

Summer Activity Booklet Workbook- this week, think about packing for holidays. Use the suitcase worksheet on page 5 to think of all the necessary items you will need.

Talk to the children about what type of holiday they will be going on: -

will it be a hot country? is it a camping holiday? do you need to take everything you own with you? What should you select from your belongings? what type of clothes will they need to bring? What about protecting themselves in the sun? Will they need all their toys with them?

You may think of other questions to ask in relation to preparing for a holiday.

Draw up a list of essential items and draw them in the suitcase below. The summer picture on page 6 (word search at the bottom) should help as a stimulus for conversation also.

Write about the picture booklet

Encourage the children to write a story about the picture. Encourage them to use their imagination and use connectives like first, then, after that, later etc.

Let the children have a go sounding out or using the word knowledge to read their work. Tell them words they may not know
